GEOGRAPHY OF THE UNITED KINGDOM

Students are often confused about some geographical terms about English speaking countries. Let's see if we can sort things out.

The United Kingdom (UK) is a sovereign state located of the northwestern coast of Europe. It includes Great Britain, the northeastern part of Ireland and many small islands. The United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy and unitary state consisting of four countries: England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.[19] It is governed by a parliamentary system with its seat of government in London, the capital, but with three devolved national administrations in Belfast, Cardiff and Edinburgh, the capitals of Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland respectively.

Sometimes people use the term Great Britain in the same form as United Kingdom but, in fact, there is a difference. The term Great Britain includes: England whose capital is London, Wales whose capital is Cardiff and Scotland whose capital is Edinburgh. Great Britain does not include Northern Ireland.

Let's have a look to these countries flags.

This is The United Kingdom Flag. Blue field with red cross of Saint George (patron saint of England), edged in white overlaid on the diagonal red cross of Saint Patrick (patron saint of Ireland), which is superimposed on the diagonal white cross of Saint Andrew (patron saint of Scotland); correctly known as the Union Flag, but generally called the Union Jack.

Northern Ireland flag. It is known as the Ulster Banner. It has no official status.

England flag. It represents Saint George's Cross.

Scotland Flag. It represents Saint Andrew's Cross.

Wales Flag.

COLD PLAY: VIVA LA VIDA

COLD PLAY: VIVA LA VIDA LYRICS
I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sweep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own
I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemy's eyes
Listen as the crowd would sing:
"Now the old king is dead! Long live the king!"
One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of sand, pillars of sand

I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can not explain
Once you know there was never, never an honest word
That was when I ruled the world
(Ohhh)

It was the wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in.
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People could not believe what I'd become
Revolutionaries Wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string
Oh who would ever want to be king?

I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can not explain
I know Saint Peter will call my name
Never an honest word
And that was when I ruled the world
(Ohhhhh Ohhh Ohhh)

Hear Jerusalem bells are ringings
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can not explain
I know Saint Peter will call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world
Oooooh Oooooh Oooooh"

THE WEBQUESTS

The Webquests are a very useful resource for teachers. Using a webquest the teacher make his/her students search and learn information about an oriented topic by surfing on the internet.
This kind of activities motivate the pupils very much.
The webquest is planned inthe same way as a didactic unit following these items: Introduction (where the activity is introduced to the pupils), objectives, contents (procedure), tasks, resources, evaluation and conclusion.
There are a lot of webquests examples. Here are some of them dealing with English language and culture:
